   I know my kids and did not want to have to worry about the stairway. I would put it at the bottom of the stairs during the day and at the top at night. I would just adjust a bit every time i moved it. It is sturdy but i would not trust it completely at the top of stairs. This is good if you don't have to constantly move it.

The fabric does bunch up if not fully extended to 42" width but that is more of an esthetic thing than a practical issue. Feeling it will suit my needs completely.
