Bought these for an indoor activity. Definitely recommend setting up an area and being mindful there will be dust and mud potentially! Our kids loved finding all the gems and searching the includes booklet to see what they found. Kids are five and used water as directed to help soften the brick when needed. Recommend assisting young ones or having an older sibling nearby to keep them on task. A lot of fun!

That's what my great nephew said to me on Christmas day when he opened the wrapping paper and saw what was inside. He started to work on it and get the gems out shortly after opening. He is 12 years old so it is sometimes difficult to find appropriate gifts for him that he would really like. This seemed to be the perfect gift for a kid who is into gemstones and loved digging them out. I would highly recommend this as a gift for boys or girls.

My 6 yo son is obsessed with rocks and gems. He loved this kit, we were so surprised on how big the gems and rocks were, some were 2 inches big. Very messy, but easy to clean up and I let them dig on the rug. keeps them busy for a short while, but my son spent hours sorting and studying each rock. We put them up to the light, dark, UV light, and weighed them. I highly recommend.

I got this last year when it was on a really good sale. I'm a geology nut and love stuff like this. It came with a little booklet, a magnifying glass, and it's a block of compressed clay that's printed with a metallic gemstone on it.I would suggest not "digging" the things out with the clay dry like they show. Instead, get a plastic bin. Fill it with water. Put the clay square in that. Let it soak for a bit. Like 20 mins if you can. You'll see the air bubbles coming out as the water goes into it. Then after it soaks awhile, go to town. Either use your hands to break up the clay pieces, or use a hammer like they show, just be careful of the gemstones. This way you also won't miss any since some of them are very small. I had a small quartz spear that would have been really easy to miss if I hadn't used water. Then just dump the clay water outside in your plants once you have the gemstones out, and rinse them off with water. It was a fun easy way to get some new gemstones and have them be a surprise. I wouldn't pay full price for this kit though. Wait until it's on sale.

This was a Christmas present for my five year old who loves rocks. She enjoyed this project immensely but I do think it was a little too advanced for her, I believe it advertised for ages eight and up. She had fun with it but made me dig out all the rocks and she polish them, looked at them with the included microscope, and matched them with the included guide. Very pretty rocks inside and a great interactive activity for kids of a wide range of ages.

I bought this for my 5 year old grandson because previously i had purchased an earth day kit from National Geographic. it only had six stones with a case that holds 8. he loved the stones so much and remembered the names of them as we read the booklet provided. with this case we went on a geological dig to find what he calls "more treasures". I love his curious heart and this gift was perfect he even recognized stones that were duplicates of the ones he already had (I didn't :-) ) and looked them up in his new booklet for his stones. Great gift for little curious and very imaginative hearts.

During this quarantine I have been looking for activities for my soon to be 4 year old girl. She loves rocks so I decided for a rainy day this would be a great activity and many people seemed to like this rock kit over others. We did this rock kit today and we both absolutely loved it!!! We got a total of 16 rocks when the box says up to 15....so a plus! My daughter was so fascinated and needed some help but not a lot. I actually liked it and was so into it I didn't need to look at my phone at all! (I'm trying to focus more on her and not my phone). She loved studying each rock and would ask to see where it was in the book. She would also tell me if she thought I was wrong with which picture I chose. The book has a short excerpt to describe each gem/rock and comes in many languages. There also is a short set of directions at the beginning of the book to assist you with how to best dig. The kit comes with a digging tool, magnifying glass and brush. I used an Allen key wrench for myself since my daughter had the tools. I also kept a cup of water on the side so we could add to the dirt when needed. I am really considering buying this again because she was so intrigued and excited. It was a very nice activity to do together. I would highly recommend it. This will take a good 3 hours.....maybe 4 if it is kids only doing it. Nice chunk of no TV time during this quarantine.

I bought this for my 3 year old because she's into finding & collecting rocks. I put the slab into an inch of water and then together used a hammer and flat head screwdriver to chisel out the slab. The water made it soft enough for my daughter to get some out too. She loved finding them and then looking at them. All day we have been opening the book and go in order identifying each rock/gem. She is still learning how to say the names of each rock.I think it would be helpful if the pronunciation of each gem was in the book. We also did not get an Agate gem, but did get a different gem/rock that is charcoal in color with sparkles all over it. It's not in the book. I think it's a blue goldstone (searching on google).

I bought this as one of our Christmas gifts for our 7 year old grandson. I didn't know what to expect. My grandson mined for the various minerals as we watched. What was uncovered was a pleasant surprise. There were many stones and the were large and beautiful. Not only was it fun for our grandson, it was a wonderful learning experience given the information about each mineral that was provided. Our grandson has also received a supposed similar product from Discovery that was very disappointing. It had one mineral stone that was so tiny, we almost missed it. The National Geographic product was beyond compare.
