On the left side (around 2/3 of the board), I applied the mud with a roller, ran my 12" drywall knife across to smooth it out, then rolled the pattern into it. On the right side, I rolled the mud on and did not smooth it out before using the pattern roller. My wife and I liked the look both ways, but our house is 100 years old, so we felt the look of the non-smoothed on the right suited it better. A bit more like an old country home.

After cutting a board the size of the old screen, I applied a layer of alabaster grout. The original brick work was very rustic, imperfect so I was hoping the grout would have the same effect. I regret not practicing once but was impatient. Sprayed the roller with nonstick cooking spray and ran it over the grout about 15 min. after placing it. Color matched the old brick and I feel it really made the section of house that was so unsightly, fresh. Made the door out of old flooring, and painted with colors of house/accents. Very happy with the roller.

I bought this to make a brick wall over an existing cinder block wall that was a mess. It really does take some getting used to so make sure you practice on some scrap wood or sheet rock. I used pam cooking spray on the roller between applications. It will stick if you don't use something and you'll make quite a mess trying to fix it. Good luck!
